Compassion

It was a beautiful moment for me that I just had to capture in picture. K and were walking home from school one sunny afternoon in February and saw an old man on the corner of the main road - we'd seen him a number of times before holding his stick, closing his eyes and putting his hand out for money from people passing by. On previous days, I would stop and point out the man to K and explain that he can't see properly and perhaps doesn't have any food to eat or a place to stay - I would take out some money from my wallet and ask K if he'd like to give it to the man...each time, K would respond with a resounding "No." I didn't force him, gave the money to the man and walked home with K while talking about how important it is that we help people like this man. But on this day, I decided not to stop or talk about the man to K. Instead, K stopped in his tracks and was silent. I asked him if he wanted to give the man some money and this time he said "Yes." I took some money from my wallet, gave it to K and told him to put it in the man's hands because he probably wouldn't be able to see K. So off K went, struggling to put the money in the man's hands and after doing so, he stood there for some time looking up to the man who was showering him with blessings. I knew K didn't understand what the man was saying because he was speaking in Tajik, a language that K doesn't understand except for a few words he's learned from kids in the neighborhood. I stood a bit far behind and took a picture while relishing in this beautiful moment. K came back to me and we continued our walk home while I explained what the man was telling him.
